How to Install Artificial Turf: DIY Guide

Installing artificial turf yourself saves $3.50/sq ft in labor. Learn the step-by-step DIY process, tools needed, and what to watch out for.

Skipping professional labor saves $3.50 per square foot on artificial turf installation — that's $1,750 on a 500 sq ft project. DIY is absolutely achievable for most homeowners, but only if you follow the right sequence. Cut corners on base prep or seaming and you'll spend more fixing it than you'd have paid a pro.


This guide walks you through the full installation process, from first cut to final brushing.


What the DIY Cost Looks Like


Before swinging a shovel, run the numbers. Using our artificial turf cost calculator, a 500 sq ft mid-range DIY project breaks down like this:


  • Mid-range turf ($5/sq ft): $2,500
  • Basic base ($1.50/sq ft): $750
  • Silica sand infill ($1/sq ft): $500
  • Professional labor: $0 (you're doing it)
  • Total: $3,750 vs. $6,550 with professional installation

  • You'll also need to budget $150–$300 for tool rentals (plate compactor, sod cutter) and $50–$100 for consumables (staples, adhesive, seaming tape). Still, the savings are real.


    Tools and Materials You'll Need


    Tools:

  • Sod cutter or flat spade (for grass removal)
  • Plate compactor — rent this, don't skip it
  • Carpet knife or utility knife with extra blades
  • Chalk line and measuring tape
  • Stiff push broom or power broom
  • Staple gun with 6-inch galvanized staples (for soft soil edges)
  • Hammer and 6-inch nails (for securing edges into wood bender board)

  • Materials:

  • Artificial turf (order 10–15% more than your measured area for waste and trimming)
  • Base material: crushed decomposed granite or class II road base
  • Weed barrier fabric (optional but recommended)
  • Seaming tape and turf adhesive (for joins)
  • Bender board or aluminum edging
  • Infill material of your choice

  • Step 1: Remove Existing Vegetation


    Strip out all existing grass and organic material down to bare soil. A sod cutter makes this fast — rent one for $80–$120/day. You want to go at least 3–4 inches deep to remove roots and prevent organic matter from decomposing under your turf (decomposition creates soft spots and can push blades out of alignment over time).


    Bag and dispose of the sod. Don't bury it or compost it in-place.

    Step 2: Build Your Base


    This is the most important step. A bad base causes drainage problems, spongy spots, and premature turf failure. Don't rush it.


    For a standard soil base:


  • Excavate 3–4 inches below your desired finished grade. The turf pile plus infill adds about 1.5–2 inches above the base, so account for that.
  • Install a weed barrier fabric if you're concerned about weed penetration through seams.
  • Spread crushed base material (decomposed granite or class II road base) in 2-inch lifts.
  • Compact each lift with the plate compactor. Run the compactor in two directions — perpendicular passes ensure even compaction.
  • Check drainage slope: aim for 1–1.5% grade away from structures. Use a level and measuring tape to confirm.
  • Final surface should be firm, flat, and smooth. Any bumps in the base will telegraph through the turf.

  • Skimping on compaction is the most common DIY mistake. A hand tamper doesn't deliver anywhere near the force of a plate compactor. Rent the real equipment.


    Step 3: Lay Weed Barrier


    Roll out the weed barrier fabric over your compacted base. Overlap seams by at least 6 inches and secure with landscape staples every 12 inches. This layer prevents weed breakthrough and also stabilizes the infill slightly.


    Some installers skip the weed barrier on concrete or dense aggregate bases. On soil-only bases, it's worth the $30–$60 material cost.


    Step 4: Cut and Position the Turf


    Roll out your turf and let it rest in the sun for 30–60 minutes before cutting. Turf expands slightly in warmth and you want it at its working size before you make permanent cuts.


    Grain direction matters. Look at the blade angle — turf blades lean in one direction (the "grain"). For the most natural look, orient the grain so blades lean away from the primary viewing angle. For most front yards, that means grain leaning toward the street.


    Rough-cut the turf 6 inches larger than your area on all sides. You'll do your final precision cuts after positioning.


    Use a chalk line to mark your trim lines, then cut from the back of the turf with a sharp utility knife. Cut in straight, confident strokes — hesitant cuts create ragged edges. Use a 4-foot straightedge guide for long cuts.


    Step 5: Seaming Multiple Pieces


    If your area requires more than one turf roll, seams are where DIY installations most often fail. Good seams are invisible; bad seams look like crop rows in a field.


    How to seam correctly:


  • Align the two pieces so the blade grain runs in the same direction.
  • Trim the edges to be seamed: remove the stitch line on each edge so both pieces can butt up tight without a visible gap or ridge.
  • Lay seaming tape centered under the joint.
  • Apply turf adhesive to the tape and fold the first piece down. Wait 2 minutes.
  • Press the second piece in firmly, butting edges together without overlap.
  • Walk the seam and press every 6 inches. Let cure for the time specified on the adhesive label (typically 30–60 minutes before adding infill).

  • Keep seams running perpendicular to foot-traffic flow where possible. Parallel seams get foot traffic directly on the join line and open up faster.


    Step 6: Secure the Perimeter


    Fold back the edges and install your bender board or aluminum edging at the perimeter. Bender board runs $1.50–$3 per linear foot and gives you something solid to nail or staple into.


    Drive 6-inch galvanized nails or screws through the turf and into the bender board every 4–6 inches around the entire perimeter. For concrete borders, use concrete anchors.


    The secured edge keeps turf from lifting, which is how wind and foot traffic damage otherwise clean installations.


    Step 7: Apply Infill


    Infill goes on last. It weighs the turf down, keeps the blades upright, and adds cushion underfoot. For residential lawns, silica sand at $1/sq ft is the standard choice.


    Apply infill with a drop spreader or hand-broadcast it in sections. Use about 1–2 lbs of silica sand per square foot. Spread one direction, then brush it in with a stiff broom. Apply a second pass perpendicular to the first. Keep spreading and brushing until the blades stand upright and the infill settles below the blade tips.

    Step 8: Final Brushing


    Run a stiff broom or power broom against the grain of the turf blades. This lifts them upright and gives the finished surface its realistic look. Power brooms can be rented for $40–$60/day and dramatically speed up this final step on larger areas.


    After the first brushing, walk the entire area and look for:

  • Visible seams (tug gently to confirm adhesive has cured)
  • Loose perimeter edges
  • Low spots or bumps in the surface
  • Uneven infill distribution

  • Touch up anything you find before calling it done.


    Common DIY Mistakes to Avoid


    Underestimating base depth. Going shallow saves maybe $50 in base material but creates spongy spots within 1–2 years.


    Skipping the plate compactor. Already mentioned, but worth repeating. Hand tamping looks like it works and doesn't.


    Cutting turf too short. Always leave extra and trim to final position. You can't add turf back.


    Mismatched grain direction. If you're seaming two pieces with opposite grain, the join will be visible from 10 feet away in certain light.


    No drainage slope. Water must have somewhere to go. A flat installation will pool and smell within months.


    Is DIY Right for You?


    DIY works well for simple rectangular areas under 800 sq ft with straightforward access and a single turf piece. Complex shapes, multiple seams, significant slopes, or areas over 1,000 sq ft benefit from professional expertise — the savings can evaporate quickly if seams fail or drainage isn't right.
